In entire India over the past 300 to 400 years we started feeling the European effect ,the European cultural influence. Just they came to enslave the country and take away our wealth and raw materials. They made the poor country of India still poorer. But due to diligence and hard work, high morality and high education and capacity to quickly acquire proficiency in science and technology India in 21st century is set to become a modern educational and technical power.
Due to 2000 years of
backwardness there was unequal development of different sections of people. The
various castes and tribes in India may be around 4000. Now with good modern
education and modern economic, industrial and technical progress we can hope
that all old differences will lessen and old difficulties will be overcome. We
have great cultural heritage since the times of ancient Vedic Aryan
philosophers, Ramayan-Mahabharat religion and the most sublime Buddhist
philosophy.
Let us study in a
very simple way the difficulties encountered by the Indian society in last 300
to 400 years of its history. It is a journey backwards in time. It is not even
accurate but written just to give a simple pen picture.
(1)In those old
days (200 years ago),for poor and middle class people, there was not much need
of visiting distant places . The simple poverty- ridden people spent all their
life quietly in a world of radius not more than 20 or 30 miles. Even 100 years
back, the number of “high schools” in an area of radius 20 or 30 miles around a
town were either nil or could be counted on fingers. People were quite
satisfied with “middle school” education. Educated young men were more than
satisfied with a small local job like that of teacher, office clerk etc.
(2)The prices of most
commodities were low and life was “happy and slow” and traditional.
Foreign mill cloth was available in plenty .It was of good fine quality and
quite cheap. But it was a society that hid the mass poverty and inequality in
society. People were however very
spiritual-minded and religious. There
was a kind of spiritual gaiety in the temple festivals and religious fairs just
as in present times. The hereditary occupations did not require any long
distance travel. The non-existence of good road and rail transport system created
a kind of stunted growth.
